Schemescapes (2025)

Schemescapes is the outcome of my Masters in Fine art and showed at the Masters degree show 2025 at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design.

Schemescapes is a series of screen-printed works which consider the role of architecture in a Scottish housing scheme landscape. The works draw from a housing scheme in the west of Fife, my adolescent home, and address my ongoing understanding of this place through metaphorical motif and colour.  Suggestive plan drawings of my family home, surrounding structures, and location mapping are built through intuitive layers of over-printing, and aid the depiction of my somewhat undecided perspective. My experimental screen-printing process purposefully remains inconclusive, mirroring my ongoing emotional development and understanding of the subject in question. 

Schemescapes visually illustrates my confused state between nostalgia and melancholy when considering my former home environment. Schemescapes fashions relevant colour stories addressing what I believe to be a subconscious hierarchical imbalance driven by aesthetic differences in homes within the scheme. Drawing from existing architecture as well as demolished architecture within the scheme reflects on the economic struggle had on its physical and cultural infrastructure. Schemescapes considers the reasons behind the lack of development in working-class landscapes, as well as the challenges which arise as a result.
